Thursday night brought some talented musicians to one of the best venues in Portland at Mississippi Studios. It was a killer lineup with Crushed Out headlining and Desert Noises in support along with local Portland group Summer Cannibals to open up the night.
This four piece has such a cool, groovy fuzz-rock sound to them. Summer Cannibals played really well and have a good potential to put out a lot of great music in the upcoming years. Can’t wait to hear more from them.
After Summer Cannibals get done with their set, Desert Noises quickly get set up for their performance. As the crowd starts to thicken, the lead singer makes a joke about how last time they played Mississippi Studios it was small empty box. Desert Noises starts the set with a newer song off their latest EP I Won’t See You then gets into “Tell Me You Love Me.” As the performance goes on, they start getting more and more into their songs. Until the last song they start dancing around and playing high flying solos as the crowd cheers them on.
Though most were a little disappointed when Desert Noises stopped playing, everyone was completely satisfied once Crushed Out took the stage. With just two members in the band they put out a ton of noise. They have a great bluesy surf-rock type of sound. After playing a couple of tunes from their latest full length Want To Give they played a great cover of The Animals’ “House of the Rising Sun.” I really enjoyed their song “Shake Can Well,” which lead singer, Frank Hoier explained how the lyrics are from WD-40 safety instructions.
Overall it was a fantastic night with lots of amazing performances. Mississippi Studios as always put on another fantastic lineup. If you get a chance to see either of these bands live, don’t hesitate to pay the cover charge.
