Live: Young Magic + Yeasayer

Last night at the Wonder Ballroom was an extraordinary lineup with Yeasayer and Young Magic. They are touring together to support both of their new albums that were released this year.

Young Magic

Young Magic was first up and they put on an excellent show full of mysterious beats and breathy vocals. The new album Still Life is one of my favorites so far. The new album is super lush and well produced, and they bring that lushness to stage as well. Definitely worth a listen and a ticket to see live.

Yeasayer

Yeasayer closed out the night with their weird indie-pop tunes. Their latest one is called Amen & Goodbye. Another great release full of glistening pop hits and awesome harmonies. Their live performance sounded great, and was full of lights and cardboard cutouts with more lights.

Overall a great show at the Wonder Ballroom. Yeasayer is hitting Europe in June so be sure to check them out live.

Top Albums of 2012 Part 2 of 5: Electronica

For the next installment of our top 50 albums list comes the most exciting category, electronic music. This category if for those artists pushing the technology side of music, whether it’s trip-step, chill-wave, or dance, good electronic music gives me entirely brand new sounds that I haven’t heard in music before. So enjoy our alphabetical list of electronic albums from 2012.

Crystal Castles – (III)

This Crystal Castles album is by far my favorite one of theirs, I never got into their music until this one came out in November. (III) is super rich in dark flavors, yet is very satisfying to dance to. It really engulfs all kinds of electronica and delivers a sound that is hauntingly beautiful.

Grimes – Visions

Visions is the perfect blend of electro-pop and dance. Grimes has been able make some of the freshest beats this year. Definitely worth listening to.

Onuinu – Mirror Grazer

This local Portland band has the whole electro-pop sound on lock down. Mirror Grazer is a super danceable album that will have your party going till the early hours of the day. Right now they are on tour so check here if they coming near you.

POLIÇA – Give You The Ghost

POLIÇA has a really unique sound, with lots of vocal manipulations and larger than life beats. Give You The Ghost is one of my favorites to go on a walk with, especially out in the cold weather.

Purity Ring – Shrines

Purity Ring’s Shrines is an album that has such an incredible sound to it. Not only is every song super good and fresh, but the whole album goes together really well and it is impossible to skip a song on it. Definitely one of my favorites this year.

Slow Magic – Triangle

Slow Magic is quite an appropriate name for an artist who makes this music. Great instrumental electronic music, some of the finest I’ve heard in some time. This album has it magical moments so check it out here.

The Soft Moon – Zeros

Soft Moon makes some of the most anxious music that I’ve heard ever. With that said Zeros is still such a great album for that aspect. Some really dark guitar and bass riffs that clash with the keys and synths makes for an intense listen. You can stream the whole album here.

Teen Daze – All Of Us, Together

This is Teen Daze’s first full length album which came out in June. It is a wonderful piece of instrumental electronic music. Above is my favorite track off of All Of Us, Together and you can check out the whole album here.

Young Magic – Melt

Melt is one of my favorite albums this mostly because the beats and sounds he gets are out of this world. The record includes a bunch of field recordings from all over the map, which adds a whole other depth to the music. If you haven’t heard this album yet, please go listen to it right now here.

Happy Tuesday! Here’s Some New Music

What a great day it is today. Valentines, the anniversary of Oregon becoming a state, and it’s my Friday! So let’s celebrate with some new releases today.
First up is Heartless Bastards with their latest effort Arrow. Some really awesome rock ‘n’ roll on this album. Put some smoky female vocals on top of that care free type of rock and you got yourself a great album. Check out all of it below then go buy it on their website here. Make sure to check out that “Only For You” track.

Next is a band called Field Music. Their latest album Plumb is a much different affair than Heartless Bastards. Field Music is a kind of pop, folk, psychedelic rock band. It’s a pretty cool and unique sound that they have going on. Check them out here.
I believe I shared this next band a couple weeks ago but they did finally come out with their first full length Melt. I’m talking about the band Young Magic. Man, oh man! I love this album. Quite possibly an early contender for album of the year. Great chill wave sounds coming from these guys, a great debut album. Check it out below then buy it via Carpark Records here.

The Babies + Lower Dens + Young Magic

So I have come across some really great music this week and need to share it all. The first band up is The Babies. With their own brand of DIY, they give indie punk-rock a refreshingly awesome sound. Their self-titled debut album is really well put together. I really enjoy the album and looking forward to see what they come out with in the future as well. Check them out here.
Something that’s more chilled out is a band called Lower Dens. Their full length that came out in 2010 is titled Twin-Hand Movement. I like it a lot, mostly because it sounds cool. Check out that album here. They also came out with a brand new single “Brains.” So make sure to check that out too.
Lower Dens – Brains by Neighborhood Tapes

Young Magic is a new band that released two 7″ last year. Another great band with a great sound to it. This time in the form of a tribal electronic that’s nice and relaxed. Their “You With Air” and “Sparkly” singles can be downloaded for free here, and stream the other two for free.
