Treefort Music Fest

Treefort 10 Day 3

Friday. The most chaotic part of Treefort Music Fest. The energy surrounding the small city of Boise is brimming with anticipation, as the festival reaches its peak form.

The end of Spring Break is near, and there is so much more partying to do.

Fruit Bats

Its so fitting and awesome that Fruit Bats open Treefort 10 day 3 main stage. You might remember Fruit Bats from your baggy jeans and converse days, and now that baggy jeans are back with a vengance, Fruit Bats are too! Fruit Bats strain of pleasant earthy folk rock / indie pop has evolved and its cool to see ultra prolific rockers of over 20 years making such amazing and relevant music today.

Deeper

Deeper has a cool new wave rock and roll sound that rolls us quickly into Treefort day 3. The rhythms push and pull across the songs and the melodies bend across the guitar strings. 9/10 would recommend Deeper.

Black Ends

Black Ends (Seattle WA) at Linen Building is a fun trip. Proclaimed gunk-pop band, the sound is heavy even sludgy at times but pops and bounces with great songwriting. We love the spooky dissonant style and you will definitely too.

Black Ends

Flipturn

What an amazing show! Flipturn had the entire Egyptian Theater up out of their seats shouting lyrics along with the band. Everyone is having a great time grooving to sunshine filled pop rock. Flipturn (Fernandino Beach FL) had not been on our radar since they formed around 2015 but they sure as heck are now, and should be on yours too.

Flipturn

Mattress

Heading underground to the arcade Spacebar for some refreshments, we came across a Treefort moment. Not knowing what to expect we caught the most bizzarre lounge act Mattress. The golden suited solo act from Portland absolutely made our night. Combining dark synth, new wave drums, and distinct vocals, Mattress made for an incredible performance.

Walk The Doctor

If you like EDM get online and check Walk The Doctor right now! This dudes beats are TIGHT! It has a cool OG hip-hop DJ vibe but with lots of dynamic samples, trap beats, and transitions that make these tracks more than just a beat.

Walk The Doctor

Mowth

Walking by trendy bike bar Handlebar, we hear alluringly upbeat punk rock — Mowth from SLC. It’s an oddly satisfying set, dancey songs with the power and energy of Heart or Sleater-Kinney. Their new single ”Time Bomb” solidifies their often made comparison to riot grrrl and you should go and give it a listen now.

Empty Suits

We love the major talent that just froths out of Boise, and Empty Suits is the whipped cream on top. These guys slam out highly listenable, energetic pop / punk / rock music that’s so tight to see live. And we love Mad Swede brewing as a venue too.

Empty Suits (Boise ID)

Spoon Benders

Spoon Benders are easily the foremost popular kids in Portland right now. Check them out and you will clearly see why; they weave epic forceful riffs with catchy hooks and psychedelic themes. Performance is on Spoon Benders resume and these young rock pros are HIGHLY qualified.

Treefort 10 Day 2

We were blown away by Treefort day 1 and wicked excited to start Treefort day 2 with Blood Lemon. Blood Lemon is special, an incredible supergroup formed between Melanie Radford from Marshall Poole & Lisa Simpson of Finn Riggins. A thousand years ago, Finn Riggins started organizing the network of regional Pacific Northwest and national indie bands that would give rise to Treefort Music Fest. Check out this playlist with music from Treefort 10 day 2.

Blood Lemon

So it’s so incredible to see Lisa coming out with new songs that are the culmination of so much rock music experience. Blood Lemon has everything you want in rock. It shreds, jams, grooves, slams and bumps. Every track is an instant classic. And they’re amazing live, it feels like you’re standing in a historic moment in time you’ll tell your grandkids about someday.

Indigo De Souza

Indigo De Souza should be on your radar. She’s a self-made singer-songwriter from the hardwood forests of western North Carolina. Recently “discovered,” by Saddle Creek Records her songs are thoughtful, catchy and resonate with an eerie remoteness.

Isla De Caras

Isla de Caras (Buenos Aires, Argentina) was a very chill surprise at the Radioland stage. Their pleasant, dreamy tunes drift out from the concrete slab mosaic of downtown boise. Their new album “Una Caricia” has a polished tropical psych sound that you should definitely check out.

The Joyrunners

Over at the punk dive The Shredder, epic local band The Joyrunners are putting out some amazing, hilarious tracks. “Generation” is a parody of the Boomer / Gen Z duality in Idaho saying “Aw it’s too hard / you can’t afford a car / well I got a mansion / and a basement with a bar.” The track “Deadbeat” has the feeling and sound of the pop-punk bands of the Millenial generation. The Joyrunners are melodic, clean and amazing honestly.

Guided By Voices

A pivotal indie band in the 90’s, Guided By Voices is so fun to see live. Their brand of old lo-fi rock always sounds like it’s broadcast from an AM radio station on another world. Singer/songwriter Robert Pollard has dance moves from over four decades and vibes with the crowd.

Smoker Dad

Smoker Dad out of Seattle is a riot. Ridiculously photogenic and fun. This is energetic rock / country / alternative music perfect for a hoe-down OR a hootenanny. Keep an eye out for Smoker Dad’s new album dropping April 8th 2022!

Smoker Dad

OSees

Blessed to see so many handsome bands. Praise be. OSees, formerly Thee Oh Sees are a massively prolific, massively awesome heavy rock / experimental psych group from San Francisco. The sun goes down at Main stage, and OSees illuminate the darkness with thundering riffs and the entrancing beats of two drummers.

GurILLA Glue

Gurilla Glue is Boise hip hop duo Weighn Beats and emcee Mo Digs coming together to make some sincerely fucking awesome old school rap. It has an old school west coast hip hop sound. Check out their self-titled GurILLA Glue LP.

GurILLA Glue

Jay Wood

Jay Wood is a rapper that flew out from Brooklyn, NYC for Treefort 10. And we’re glad for it. He’s got a smooth r&b hip-hop and trap style with songs that are well produced and highly listenable.

SunDog

Psych-pop outfit from Anchorage AK, SunDog is one of our favorites. Like a real iridescent geometry of halos around the sun, these guys blind you with their beauty. SunDog takes a heavy metal psych sense and melts and bends the riffs into echoey pop songs. Do everyone a favor and go listen to SunDog right now.

WEEED

We like Weeed. Portland based “biocosmic” rock band has been around for 13 years already! We know them as a classic pdx psych outfit with fabulous live sets and this was among the best. We didn’t get great photos because we’re coming up on 8 straight hours of partying. It’s then we realize the “Sonic Temple” venue we’re dancing in is a masonic temple. But we don’t mind completing this masonic ritual in front of the altar of rock and we’ll do it again Friday on Treefort 10 Day 3.

Treefort 10 Day 1

Wednesday

Commence the 10th annual Treefort Music Fest held in Boise, ID. Attending this festival for the last 10 years has been a truly blessed experience. This year started as any other, a seven hour drive through the vast expanse of eastern Oregon. The winding road gives us time to reflect on past Treefort, while researching what bands to see in the upcoming days.

JayWood

Rolling into Boise on Wednesday evening allowed us to start our journey at the Linen Building to see JayWood. Hailing from Winnipeg, Canada, this four piece is primed to get you dancing with their indie styled funk-soul.

JayWood

Switch Full Lotus

A new venue for the festival this year was the Masonic Temple, where we saw local Boise band Switch Full Lotus. This post-math-rock, jammed out band plays heavy soundscapes that are combined with prog-rock elements.

Snail Mail

The first main stage act that we caught was the highly anticipated Snail Mail. This Baltimore indie band has all the makings of becoming a household name. Having recovered from recent vocal surgery, Lindsey Jordan is back in action and sounding excellent. The way that Snail Mail writes their apathetic pop-rock songs resonates deeply with me.

Dante Elephante

The dreamy soul band from Santa Barbara played an excellent set at the tripped out Sonic Temple. I had no idea what to expect from Dante Elephante, now I know why they have a cult following. The soulful-pop sound makes it easy to dance to. Check the latest album Mid-Century Modern Romance.

Dante Elephante

Calva Louise

Journeying all the way from Manchester, Calva Louise has an incredible sound for a three piece. Mixing all kinds of styles I would say that they have a cyberpunk industrial heavy rock sound. The new album Euphoric has a sci-fi/graphic-novel feel to it.

Calva Louise

Slothrust

The Boston band has a new album out called Parallel Timeline. Slothrust has an excellent taste of alt-rock sound blended with progressive songwriting. They headlined a packed show at The Shredder.

Whippin Shitties

Checking out Mad Swede Brewing, we caught the local boys, Whippin Shitties. Full of beer and joy, we rocked out hard to the pop-alt-punk sound of Whippin Shitties. A must listen for any party.

The Simplots

We finished out the night with another local Boise band called The Simplots. A rock fusion band with incredibly high energy. It was a great ending to a most successful day 1 of Treefort Music Fest.

6 Bands We’re Stoked to See at Treefort 2022

The Nude Party

The Nude Party Treefort 2022 is going to be amazing. They have an awesome smooth rock and roll style. It’s super classic and reminisces in 1970’s blues rock and the early beginnings of indie like David Bowie & The Velvet Underground. Some of our favorites are “Astral Man” and “Chevrolet Van” off their 2018 self-titled album The Nude Party. They’re scheduled to help close out Sunday 3/27 at 11:30PM at The Olympic.

The Districts

We’re STOKED for The Districts Treefort 2022. If you like indie rock bangers with lots of energy and low key style, you’ll love The Districts. Their album “A Flourish and Spoil” has tracks like “Young Blood” that bring you right back to the hey-day of cool indie rock. These guys are helping kick off Treefort Music fest at Neurolux late on Wednesday (around 11:20PM). Don’t miss it!

Dedicated Servers

We remember seeing Dedicated Servers Treefort #1 in 2011. Back when Alefort was $30 for unlimited beer. Miracle we remembered. But these guys are really THAT NOTABLE. Dedicated Servers are proof that hip-hop thrives wherever — from the thick, loud urban jungle of Brooklyn NY to the dusty expanses of SW Idaho. We like the unassuming, cool, anti-hip vibes & excellent chilled out beats of Dedicated Servers. Check ’em out on Wednesday night at 10:50 PM sharp at Spacebar Arcade.

Brother.

You like FRESH INDIE MUSIC?? Of course, you… Then you should be stoked to see Brother. at Treefort 2022. These guys have the elegant sensibility of an early Youth Lagoon or Beach House, forming soft towering structures of vibey tunes that grow and fall all around you. DON’T FUCKEN MISS IT. Catch Brother. on Thursday 3/24 @ 11:10PM at The District venue.

The Joyrunners

We’re so stoked for The Joyrunners Treefort 2022. Fuck. These guys are so good. They bring those alt-rock comfy flannel and sweater coated vibes that’ll bring you right back to 2001. Sounds a bit like Presidents of the United States with the GOOD parts of Good Charlotte mixed together. We’ll see you at The Shredder on Thursday 3/24 to GET DOWN on some The Joyrunners at Treefort 2022.

GurILLA Glue

Check. Check one two. Introducing GurILLA Glue Treefort 2022. A Boise hip-hop supergroup, the union of producer Weighn Beats and emcee Mo Digs, you should not — under any circumstances — miss GurILLA Glue at Treefort 2022. When you think of classic underground hip-hop like Aesop Rock (who GurILLA Glue opened for at Treefort 2016) and MF Doom …RIP… think of GurILLA Glue. Also reminiscent of the sincerity and chillness of Myke Bogan, another Treefort Alum. GurILLA Glue at Treefort 2022 can be seen at Spacebar Arcade on Thursday 3/24 riiiiight around 10PM.
